From Degrees to Skills: Cross River State’s Initiative for Youth Employment and Economic Empowerment”
In August 2024, the Mountain of Fire and Miracle Ministries Youth Church Region 17, Calabar witnessed a momentous event: the graduation ceremony of the Free Skill Acquisition & Digital Empowerment 2024 program. Representing Her Excellency, Rev. (Mrs.) Eyo-Anwan Bassey Otu, the First Lady of Cross River State, Dr. (Mrs) Virginia Ironbar, wife of the Chief of Staff to the Governor of Cross River state and Director Pre-Degree, University of Calabar, addressed a gathering of distinguished guests, graduates, and community members.
Dr. Ironbar conveyed heartfelt congratulations from Her Excellency to the participants of the program. She acknowledged the hard work and dedication of both the graduates and the instructors who played pivotal roles in the success of the initiative. The ceremony marked a significant step towards addressing the challenges posed by rising unemployment and the need for practical, employable skills.
In her remarks, Dr. Ironbar emphasized the importance of skill acquisition in today’s fast-paced world. She highlighted that a traditional degree alone is no longer enough in a knowledge-driven economy. The ability to create jobs and drive economic growth hinges on possessing practical skills that complement formal education.
The Free Skill Acquisition & Digital Empowerment program, supported by the Office of The First Lady, aims to bridge this gap through the Humanity Without Borders Empowerment Initiatives. Her Excellency has made substantial investments in providing skills training and fostering self-sufficiency among the youth. This initiative aligns with the principle of “Teach a person to fish, and you feed them for a lifetime,” reflecting a commitment to sustainable development.
Beyond the scope of skill acquisition, Her Excellency’s efforts have touched various aspects of community development. Her NGO has funded scholarships for medical and law students, supported educational projects for primary pupils, and organized medical outreaches, among other contributions. Her work extends to providing life-changing support such as prosthetic limbs and securing job placements for Cross River youths.
Dr. Ironbar urged the graduates to recognize and utilize the value of their newly acquired skills. She cautioned against the pitfalls of complacency, referencing the Biblical parable of the servant who buried his talent. Instead, she encouraged the graduates to remain diligent and innovative, with the potential to create job opportunities for others.
In closing, Dr. Ironbar wished the graduates success in their future endeavors, emphasizing Her Excellency’s unwavering commitment to empowering the youth of Cross River State. The ceremony not only celebrated individual achievements but also underscored the broader mission of fostering a robust and thriving economic environment.
