NATIONAL YOUTH GAMES ASABA 2024: DELTA, C’RIVER & EDO SHINES IN MIX RELAY @ THE CLOSING CEREMONY

The 8th edition of the National Youth Games concluded on September 19, 2024, at the Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba, marking a significant milestone in Nigerian sports. The closing day featured thrilling performances, with the 400×100 mixed relay highlighting the competitive spirit of the event. Edo State secured victory in this race with a remarkable time of 45.32 seconds, edging out Delta State, which claimed the silver medal.

In the women’s 4×400 meters, Team Delta showcased their prowess, finishing first with an impressive time of 3:34.15 seconds. Cross River proved strong, taking the silver, while Edo rounded out the podium with bronze. The boys’ 4×400 meters event saw Delta continuing their dominance, winning gold with a time of 3:20.83 seconds. Abia State took home the silver, and Ogun State finished third with the bronze.

The tournament witnessed the presence of dignitaries, including the Governor of Delta State, Elder Sheriff Oborevbori, represented by his deputy, Sir Monday Oyeme. Festus Owhohjero, the Director General of the State Sports Commission, delivered the welcome address, while the closing remarks were made by Sports Minister Senator John Eno, highlighting the success of the event.

Team Delta emerged as the overall champion of the games, amassing a total of 111 medals: 46 gold, 31 silver, and 34 bronze. Lagos State followed in second place with a total of 65 medals, including 26 gold, while Edo State secured third with 59 medals—18 gold, 13 silver, and 28 bronze. This year’s National Youth Games not only showcased young talents but also fostered camaraderie and sportsmanship among the states, laying a solid foundation for the future of athletics in Nigeria.

The event’s success reinforces the importance of youth sports development in the country, promising an ultimate boost to the nation’s athletic aspirations. As the games conclude, anticipation builds for the next edition, where emerging talents will once again have the opportunity to shine on a national stage.
